“Time is the only road. . .”
This song could be known as the “Seeker’s Anthem,” I think. Singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey, a friend of mine from college, captures eloquently the yearning within so many people for deeper meaning, larger connections, but also the smaller balances of personal relationships. The most recent version of the song appears on his newest CD release, “Notes from Elsewhere.” There are also many mp3s available for free download on his website.
A Better Way to Go
by Peter Mulvey
I just came from the guru’s website
I’m still washing off the smell
Man, why don’t he just go on TV
And tell us all, “Give up or go to hell”I was only looking if they had something to say
Lately it has been hard to get through my day
I was looking for something I just don’t know
I’ve been looking for a better way to go
Because there’s something missing deep inside me
That’s as common as the rain
I’m long on good intentions
But I’ve got zero tolerance for painAnd in this, I’m like everyone I find
We try, it’s so hard to just be kind
And the ones we love, sometimes we hurt them so
So we’re looking for a better way to goI’m going crazy
With the sirens from the past
Am I too lazy
to lash my sorry ass to the mast?
Everyday, I lose another chunk of myself
Everyday there’s more junk upon my shelfAnd the biggest joke of all
Is the one that we all know
Time is the only road
Everyone knows where it goesI don’t want a destination different from the rest
I don’t want to win because I tried my best
I only hope there is somebody there to know
And so please help me find a better way to go
