Spelling Bee is Today! [Update]
So we’re keeping our eyes on Miss Kiara Jones, from Ray Elementary right here in Hyde Park. If you’ll recall, Brandon took second place to her in the all-school spelling bee, and she went on to win 1st place in the all-city bee. She’s in Washington D.C. today, competing in the National event.
Her individual results are posted on the Scripps web site, and so far so good! Passed the written round and her first word - typographical.
So exciting!
Update
Looks like Kiara did not make it to round three today, even though she spelled her round two word correctly. It must have something to do with the written exam? The details are not on the website.
Any spelling bee geeks out there know what might have happened?
The spellers are required to get 21 combined points between the written, multiple-choice exam, and one word spelled orally. That test is a demon! While Kiara did earn her 3 bonus points for spelling “typographical,” that did not add up to enough with her score on the 25-question test. According to the Chicago Tribune (reg req’d), the first two rounds busted out 179 spellers.
Any which way, we’re all proud of you, Kiara!! Out of 286 spellers this morning, there are now 89 left to go through the Semifinal and Championship rounds tomorrow.
