Obama and McCain’s Legislative Records, Side by Side

Hilzoy at Obsidian Wings does a fantastic job of distilling real data about the business of legislation into something you can really use to compare the records of two politicians.

Here is a listing of substantive bills and amendments that were written by Senators Obama and McCain during the 109th and 110th sessions of Congress, the time they spent together in the Senate, that were actually passed by the Senate, though some were vetoed and some did not get through the House.

Here are substantive bills and amendments from the 110th Congress that were co-sponsored by either Senator Obama or McCain.

And here are the co-sponsored bills from the 109th Congress.

At first glance, the hard record confirms my own perceptions that Obama spends his time working on issues that make a real difference in the lives of your typical American citizens, and McCain just doesn’t — most of his part of these lists is spent on military matters, along with a seeming preoccupation with the FCC.

But read them for yourself and draw your own conclusions — this is, by far, the best clear and neutral comparison of hard data on these two candidates that I have seen.

Cross posted at my Obama Journal.
